Customer Service 101 - Behind the Scenes: Gratitude, Grit, and the Everyday Chaos of Small Business Life

Sharing a few things from just the last two days — because sometimes, the behind-the-scenes of small business life feels like juggling soap, spreadsheets, and sanity all at once. But underneath it all, there’s a whole lot of gratitude.

Running a small business means wearing every hat imaginable. Some days are smooth and rewarding, others... well, let’s just say they test your patience and sense of humor.

#1 – Mailchimp:
The ongoing saga of fake accounts continues. Hours spent deleting, emailing, waiting — all while paying for a service that’s supposed to make life easier. Mailchimp is owned by Intuit (think Walmart-size company), yet finding a real person to talk to feels like calling an 800# to nowhere. After over 10 years with them, I’m not quick to let go… but wow, it sure tests your small business grit.....you need these services too - takes so much time....

#2 – Springfield Wraps:
Now this is what good customer service looks like. I first worked with them back in 2022 when I rebranded and had my beautiful new labels made — inspired by a 1930s carton that honored my dad. Since then, Springfield Wraps has consistently gone above and beyond. As I prepare for another milestone in my business, their help and attention to detail mean the world. It’s a reminder that great service isn’t about perfection — it’s about partnership.

#3 – Equipment failure:
It’s inevitable. Things break. Scales quit, small appliances spark out, and warranties get “reviewed.” My best advice? Ask a lot of questions before you buy — especially about returns and how those warranties actually work in real life. These hiccups are part of the grind, but they make every successful day that much sweeter....I am referring to a small company that took me 16 emails to resolve.....and Yes...I will do business with them again... challenging....

4 – Huntville Pantry LLC:

A huge thank you for carrying my soaps — including a few of my sold-out varieties honor to see my work on your shelves, and I’m so grateful for the support from local businesses like yours.

#5 Epackage supply a medium-sized company in Indiana for boxes, custom labels and containers - excellent customer service -

And lastly, a recent conversation with another small business owner really struck me — about what it means to feel like a stranger in your own backyard. Sometimes, the hardest part isn’t the work itself, but building connections in a world that’s always moving so fast.

At the end of the day, small business is a wild mix of exhaustion, pride, laughter, and hope. It’s a constant balancing act between fixing what’s broken and celebrating what’s beautiful. But through it all — I’m grateful. For every customer, every partner, every lesson.

Because this isn’t just about soap. It’s about people, persistence, and the quiet joy of doing what you love — even when it’s messy. 💛
